1. He can follow in the footsteps of Tito Sotto, who was a lousy comedian but a very funny senator.

2. During lulls in the Senate, he can have Luningning and her dancers gyrate on the floor. But this won’t be the first time someone gyrates in the Senate. Remember the impeachment hearings of Erap Estrada?

3. He can make a privilege speech and insult anyone and everyone, since he’ll be immune from suit.

4. He can write a bill to make Pau liniment the national balm.

5. He can write a bill to make spousal abuse a non-criminal offense.

6. Hell, he can even write a bill to make women second-class citizens and mere sex toys. Chavit Singson would love him!

7. He can distribute money, not to mention dollars, to the other senators and claim he was doing it for the Senate good, complete with sentimental music in the background.

8. He can cheat his way to become Senate President. He was able to do it in his show; why not the Senate?

9. If the public loses interest in the Senate, he can offer house and lot packages to the public so they can stampede –literally speaking– to the Senate entrance. If anyone gets trampled to death, there’s always Gaby Lopez to defend him.

10. He can be the best example of why we shouldn’t vote idiots as senators.

Let’s answer the question that the title of this post asks in a different way. Should we be proud of the likes of Willie Revillame or other entertainers in the international scene who make a mockery of Filipino senses and sensibilities?

Take the case of Revillame. What does he symbolize when he is viewed by an international audience? He symbolizes arrogance, sexism, impunity to insult his fellowmen and general inanity. To expose him for what he truly is, can this be crab mentality?

Let’s take another entertainer, Martin Nievera. How do we perceive him? In the vernacular, saksakan ang yabang (sorry to English readers because this can’t be translated word for word). He was warned by others not to sing the National Anthem (for the Pacquiao-Hatton fight) in any other way than it should be sang.

He didn’t heed the warnings. Instead he sang it the way he wanted to sing it. Why? Is it being Filipino? No, it’s being Martin Nievera. When you’re not internationally recognized, singing the National Anthem correctly will just feature a Filipino celebrity singing the Philippine National Athem. But when you try to give your own version, just maybe, your name will be remembered, i.e. “Martin Nievera just sang the Philippine National Anthem;” especially when you try to give it a rousing ending.

It’s just the same as singers singing other people’s songs. They give their own version so they will be remembered instead of the original singers.

So when Nievera –or the latest one, Dessa– slaps our cultural sensibilities by making a mockery of the National Anthem (not to mention Philippine laws), is it crab mentality to write against it?

Sure, we may write about it in a stinging manner. But we were first stung by the insensitivity of these "professional and talented" singers.

In glaring contrast, look at Lea Salonga. She’s internationally recognized. Obviously she’s comfortable with who she is. This is why she doesn’t have to sing the National Anthem her own way. So we’re proud of her!

Heck, we’re even proud of Sam Milby, because here’s a guy born and raised in the U.S., but who’s really trying to master Tagalog and to even speak it without an American accent (hello, Martin Nievera!).

Yet, we’re not perfect. So, perhaps we perceive things cross-eyed. Nevertheless, think about this: what we perceive may very well be what people are unknowingly revealing.

My dog is funnier. But I’m not going to talk about my dog although she’s more noble.

In one of those videos you can catch in youtube, which I’m featuring below, Revillame had as contestants aspiring comedians. Yet, instead of encouraging or helping them in their careers (doesn’t ABS-CBN like to brandish Revillame as a bleeding heart?), he insults them one by one.

And that’s how Revillame gets his laughter, by insulting his fellow Filipinos. The tragedy is that these contestants will allow themselves to be insulted in the hope that they’ll win huge amounts of moolah. It becomes doubly tragic when they don’t win.

Do the big bosses of ABS-CBN know about this? They would be stupid not to. Do they tolerate it? Of course! Because it earns them huge amounts of moolah as well.

In the aftermath of the infamous Wowowee stampede where over 70 people died, ABS-CBN top brass Charo Concio sought to justify the label that Wowowee was a mendicancy-promoting show by saying that a percentage of Wowowee earnings go to charity. In other words, the ends justify the means. So what if they exploit and insult poor people?

That’s a Machiavellian concept. It also hides the inherent greed of ABS-CBN.

So are they going to get rid of Wowowee and the obnoxious Revillame? Not a chance! It’s easier to ask for the moon.

What ABS-CBN will do is they’ll have Revillame lie low for some time. Then they’ll come up with 30 seconder clips extolling Revillame and/or Wowowee. These will be complete with soft music and highly emotional spiels that are keyed to win the sympathy of their televiewers. ABS-CBN are experts at this.

When all is clear, Revillame will come back. Yet, as sure as the the sun rises everyday, he’ll find himself in trouble again. This is because his arrogance will emerge anew.

Then the cycle will turn again.

(note: I have nothing to do with those who made the video featured below. I feature it to show the extent of how lovingly "Kapamilya" Revillame is.)

If Cory Aquino’s color is yellow, Willie Revillame’s is arrogance.

Ok so arrogance isn’t a color. Nevertheless it befits Revillame. Last Monday, when the remains of former President Cory Aquino were being brought from La Salle Greenhills to the Manila Cathedral, Revillame complained loudly on live TV why the procession was being televised –albeit in smaller frames– alongside his show. He demanded that the frames be removed which the network did. But that insulted the sensibilities of the Filipinos who were outraged at such disrespect.

Many said that Revillame should have let his program go off the air instead in deference to the most beloved Philippine leader. Still others opined that the least Revillame could have done was complain off air.

But that’s what arrogance does. It makes you speak your mind no matter who’s listening. It makes you think that you’re much higher than anybody else, including the person who was responsible in restoring the very network that hires Revillame.

In his weak apology published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Revillame said that his request to stop the inserted video was really "a sign of love and respect for Tita Cory."

Whaaaattttt????!!!!

Go to youtube.com and search for that video segment, you’ll see that Revillame was always saying, "ako," "ako," "ako." It was not about respect to President Aquino. It was about his being distracted. Personally I suspect that Revillame didn’t like the competition as televiewers would certainly be more interested in watching the events surrounding the death of President Aquino.

Yet, this isn’t just about Revillame’s disrespect for a fallen leader. Revillame has always been arrogant. Look at youtube and see how he insults contestants and guests. Perhaps he feels that he’s a demi-god who can do anything in his show. Search philiblogs.com for "Willie Revillame" and read my blogs about him and the insensitivity of ABS-CBN for the Filipino in continuing to air Wowowee.

Perhaps now ABS-CBN will step out of its character of being greedy and finally put a stop to this mendicancy-promoting program and it’s obnoxious host, Willie Revillame.

So, what else is new from a show that is responsible for the deaths of 70 people in a stampede that Wowowee continues to try to blame on others but themselves?

What’s new from a show that proclaims to the world it is a family-oriented program but continues to feature skimpily-clad women obscenely gyrating on the dance floor? So what, you may ask?

Well, just this: Last Sunday, in the children’s show, “Going Bulilit,” they had a segment that mimicked Wowowee. There was a boy impersonating Willie Revillame. Then there were girls acting as the dancers who were, get this, skimpily clothed! All these children were less than 10 years old!

Welcome to the Kapamilya channel where we teach your daughters to be nightclub dancers!

What else is new from a noontime show that promotes mendicancy and then makes fun of Filipinos who join its contests and have no choice but to be mocked for cash that won’t even be able to feed them for a month?

If Wowowee is found out to have cheated that day, will ABS-CBN shut it down? I doubt it. When money is your god, you don’t know the meaning of shame.
