Tears for Raul Roco

I shed quite a few tears on Raul Roco's passing. I agree with Teddy Boy Locsin when he said that Raul Roco was "the best President the Philippines never had." And that this was "an indictment against the Philippine electorate."

Raul Roco wasn't flashy, nor were his campaigns. He was always low-key. Yet he inspired!

And that's what the Philippines needs -- a leader who can inspire! We don't need a leader who promises to solve the country's problems, because the country's problems are too complex for one person to solve. It takes each Filipino here and abroad to contribute into solving the country's problems. But we need a leader who will lead by inspiration, integrity and example.

What did we have in the last Presidential elections but TV and movie stars cavorting on stage? But the more serious platforms from candidates like Raul Roco were drowned out by the noisy, pointless campaign strategies of the other candidates.

So we continue to vote in clowns, charlatans and conmen to political office. Then we complain when we still find ourselves in a mess.

If there's anything to learn from the life of Raul Roco, it's not just that we should strive to be better Filipinos, but that we should strive to be better Filipinos and elect the best of us to leadership.
