Unofficially Breaking the Law

February 6th, 2007

Are you starting to see those political ads on TV? Actually they can’t technically be called political ads because the people featured on those ads haven’t officially filed as yet their candidacy with the Comelec.

Thus, they’re not breaking the election law that disallows campaigning before the mandated campaign period. In other words they’re unofficially breaking the law.

Granted, the ads don’t outrightly say, “Vote for…,” but you don’t have to be a political analyst (they’re a dime-a-dozen come election time) to notice they are indeed political ads.

When you have politicians circumventing the law oh so surreptitiously like that, I hate to think what they’re capable of once they’re in office. Yet, what can you expect with our politicians? Still, we vote them into office everytime.

And guess who’s running alongside our trapos? Once again we see a bevy of actors signifying an intention to run in the coming elections. There’s nothing really wrong with that. However, let’s see some substance.

What, for example, can we get out of Richard Gomez? What accomplishments does he have to merit his being addressed as Senator if he wins? Good looks and marriage into a wealthy family hardly give one the capabilities to enact laws.

Yet we still vote them in. Then we have the gall to compain about the state of our country!

However, there is one good thing about the coming elections: Tito Sotto is running again. As a comedian, he was terrible. As a senator he was a terrific comedian!

    Haha…

But seriously, I think it is only the mass media who has the power to correct our downward spiraling political situation. However, they are not doing their jobs.. It may be that we can influence them but I am not yet sure how…

I beg to disagree, Sef. It’s every Filipino’s responsibility to change our political climate. We can enlist the help of mass media by letting them know we’re mature enough to dictate on them. For example, if we boycotted that mendicancy-promoting show, “Wowowee,” perhaps ABS-CBN and the other networks will give Filipinos socially-redeeming programs.
