National Anthem Mangled Again

August 19th, 2009

It happened again! At the start of Pinoy Power 2, featuring the Donaire-Concepcion boxing match, U.S.-based Filipina songstress Dessa sang her own version of Lupang Hinirang and mangled it. She sang it slow as if she were giving a funeral dirge and then tried to end it with a rousing high-note, which went badly off-key.

Didn’t she learn from the criticisms of the bad rendition of the national anthem of His Haughtiness, Martin Nievera, during the Pacquiao-Hatton fight?

Organizers of these boxing matches should make sure that the singers of our national anthem will sing it as it should be sang and with pride. And pleeeaaaassseee, get a real Filipino to sing it. Not a Filipino who holds an American passport.

The problem with singers like Dessa and His Haughtiness is they try to use these boxing matches as a venue to showcase their talents. Desperate for worldwide attention, they try to end the national anthem with a big bang, only to fizzle at the end and have it backfire on them.

They are fortunate that the Filipino boxers win their matches. Otherwise it would have been doubly tragic.

Next time a Filipino mangles the natonal anthem, I suggest he/she gets knocked out in public. After all, they shame the Philippines with their showboating.

First of all Dessa is and will always be a real filipino and does not have a US PASSPORT. And, she did not intend to showcase her talent for it has been proven over and over again that she is indeed a Professional and talented singer (get your facts right will yah?) so wala na shang kailangan i-prove! and I dont know if you know anything about music but for you to say na it was OFF KEY? Cmon! listen to it again! We were at the Hard Rock at the time of the fight and alam ng lahat ng nanood ng live na maganda ang rendition nya, hindi lang Filipino’s that night ang pumuri sa kanyang pag awit maging mga banyagang nakararami ay lumapit at pinuri sha not to include the TOP RANK Production Crews na nagsabing “IT WAS SO FAR THE BEST FILIPINO NATIONAL ANTHEM THAT WE HEARD” so again, please get your information correct before you start opening your mouth on issues you don’t have any knowledge at all!

Amber Black, you wrote, “TOP RANK Production Crews na nagsabing “IT WAS SO FAR THE BEST FILIPINO NATIONAL ANTHEM THAT WE HEARD””

So now organizers of boxing matches (not to mention tipsy patrons at Hard Rock) are a better judge of music. This is the basis for your argument?

That’s really funny! You should write for us.

It is not the basis of my argument pero ang point lang kse is tigilan na ang crab mentality specially sa maga ganitong bagay dahil wala naman masama sa ginawa nung tao. ang hirap kase sa mga katulad nyo ang gagaling nyo mang judge eh ano rin po ba ang credentials nyo? taga NHI din ba kayo? imbes na matuwa at maging proud sa kababayan kung ano ano pang sinasabi nyong nakakasira eh kahit naman himayin pa natin note for note yung pagka kanta ni Dessa eh wala naman mali. but I will rest my case now because obviously kulang kulang ka sa information mo and it is pointless na maki pag argue sa taong hindi nalalaman ang sinasabi. (sabihin pa na REAL FILIPINO ang kunin eh hello kilala mo ba ng personal si dessa?) for you to ASSUME na US PASSPORT na sha? but in which case GodSpeed na lang and next time alamin muna ang tamang information bago magsulat kse nakakahiya kung mali mali ang sinasabi :)

Amber Black, just read my next post to understand if we have a crab mentality or not. Just this: Dessa may be the most professional and the most talented singer who doesn’t hold a US passport. But does she have the right to sing the National Anthem the way she sang it?

Do you know it’s against the law to sing the National Anthem in any other way than it should be sang?

Read again the title of my post. That’s the point. Get it?
